Action

  • P-Patch Trust works to acquire, build, preserve and protect community gardens in Seattle s neighborhoods.

  • Through, advocacy, leadership and partnerships, The Trust expands access to community gardening across economic, racial, ethnic, ability and gender lines; builds community and promotes organic gardening.

  • We seek to break urban isolation by providing opportunities for people to garden together, learn from each other, develop a sense of neighborhood, and create a more livable urban environment.

Our Work

Our volunteer board focuses their work in two areas; garden acquisition and program development, support and advocacy.

Building Gardens Committee

  • support the development of P-Patch Gardens on Trust land.
  • provide financial support for acquiring and developing gardens.

Growing Communities Committee

  • Provide community gardens with small development grants, plot rental fees for low-income gardeners and tools for all at the garden to use.
  • Support Seattle Market Gardens a community supported agriculture (CSA) program in partnership with the City of Seattle and the Seattle Housing Authority.
  • Assist Lettuce Link (a Solid Ground program) to distribute tons of fresh produce from the more than 60 community gardens to area food banks each year.
  • Advocate for issues of food security, community gardening, urban agriculture, community development and organic gardening.

P-Patch Post Newsletter

With the hard work of committed and energetic volunteers, the P-Patch Trust publishes a quarterly newsletter called “P-Patch Post”.  In here you can find seasonal gardening tips, recipes, stories on inspirational gardeners, the Trust’s Board Presidents editorial and much much more.

Advocacy

P-Patch Trust advocates for community gardening and urban agriculture through networks and relationship building with a variety of Seattle leaders.

Grants & Tools

P-Patch Trust donates an annual fund towards the purchase of needed tools for P-Patch Gardens that need new tools such as shovels, rakes, garden forks and other important tools that makes the garden function.

Garden Leadership

P-Patch Trust hosts regular ongoing meetings for the more than 70 garden leaders to meet and discuss the ups and downs of garden coordinating.  These networking meetings are great opportunities to share experiences, learn tips and ideas for encouraging participation in the garden and involving the neighbors.  For more information contact Board Member Mark Huston (mark@ppatchtrust.org).

Program Incubation

P-Patch Trust has a history of incubating new programs, including projects that have continued on to be housed within other organizations. Past projects include Lettuce Link (now with Solid Ground), Cultivating Communities & Cultivating Youth.  Incubating a program means providing strategic oversight, financial contributions and organizational/administrative support.

Program/Garden Support

Every year, P-Patch Trust supports low-income gardeners through a program that covers the cost of garden fees ($34-$67 depending on the plot size).  When an individual or family submits their application for a garden plot they are able to ask for assistance.  The Trust covers several thousand dollars of plot fees annually.

P-Patch Trust also supports gardens by providing financial accounting and oversight, or fiscal agencies to groups of gardeners seeking grants and fundraising opportunities.
